Mei Ling, the sexpot of the two, constantly throws herself at men, testing her powers and satisfying a desire that no respectable Chinese girl should dare admit. All the while, there is a huge dance around prepping, cooking, serving and delivering food to customers of Double Happiness, the restaurant owned by the grandmother. Throughout the novel, Moonie and Mei Long move inexorably toward fulfilling their Chinese immigrant destiny: both go to Ivy League colleges and become successful.

But there is a fundamental strain of sadness that courses through the book. The girls are basically abandoned by their parents at an early age —- the overworked and unappreciated father dies early and suddenly, and the mother never finds her element in America and eventually moves back to Hong Kong, leaving the girls to the grandmother’s care.

All unhappy aspects of the immigrant story are presented: the long hours, the sacrifices made in the struggle to make good, the battle between one’s culture and values and the culture and values of the new land, being the lower-class citizen in the new country, the unhappy past that was left behind but whose ghosts or scars still follow everyone around.

Su and a group of friends pooled their money to print the hymnal, which will be distributed to house churches in China. The one she holds in her hand was one of the first off the press.

“We have not had a hymnal,” she says smiling. “All of the songs are written by Chinese. It’s very exciting to have our own praise songs.”

Like so many others, Su came to the city from a rural family of nine children to build a better life. Families are larger in rural areas since minority families often can legally have more than one child.

“I have six older siblings and two younger ones,” Su says. “We knew we needed to move to the city if we were going to succeed.”

Su’s interests lie in cooking. Since she was young, she has been in the kitchen learning to prepare new dishes.

“At first, my mother and my aunts let me cook only the greens,” she says. “I learned more as I got older.”

One of her older sisters moved to the provincial capital and became a believer. She began sharing her faith with Su, especially after she also had moved to the city.

“I didn’t like this Jesus,” Su recounts. “I told my sister her beliefs were not Chinese, that this religion was foreign and not good for us.”

She did notice, though, that her sister seemed much happier, and her personality was different — so much so that Su began to listen.

“After some time, I wasn’t against believing,” she says. “I liked to gamble, though, and I didn’t want to give it up. So I didn’t believe just yet.”

Eventually, Su did pray for salvation. She gave up gambling and made a commitment to spread the Gospel among her countrymen.

Haley, professor of marketing at University of New Haven, wrote this book together with his wife Usha and Tan Chin Tiong, deputy president of Singapore Management University, through interviews with major Overseas Chinese business executives. Usha is an Asia Programs Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University. They reside in the United States while Tan is in Singapore.

In those families, if the first child was a girl, it was more likely that a second child would be a boy, according to recent studies of census data. If the first two children were girls, it was even more likely that a third child would be male.

Demographers say the statistical deviation among Asian-American families is significant, and they believe it reflects not only a preference for male children, but a growing tendency for these families to embrace sex-selection techniques, like in vitro fertilization and sperm sorting, or abortion.

New immigrants typically transplant some of their customs and culture to the United States — from tastes in food and child-rearing practices to their emphasis on education and the elevated social and economic status of males. The appeal to immigrants by clinics specializing in sex selection caused some controversy a decade ago.

But a number of experts expressed surprise to see evidence that the preference for sons among Asian-Americans has been so significantly carried over to this country. “That this is going on in the United States — people were blown away by this,” said Prof. Lena Edlund of Columbia University.

She and her colleague Prof. Douglas Almond studied 2000 census data and published their results last year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In general, more boys than girls are born in the United States, by a ratio of 1.05 to 1. But among American families of Chinese, Korean and Indian descent, the likelihood of having a boy increased to 1.17 to 1 if the first child was a girl, according to the Columbia economists. If the first two children were girls, the ratio for a third child was 1.51 to 1 — or about 50 percent greater — in favor of boys.

Studies have not detected a similar preference for males among Japanese-Americans.

The findings published by Professors Almond and Edlund were bolstered this year by the work of a University of Texas economist, Prof. Jason Abrevaya. He found that on the basis of census and birth records through 2004, the incidence of boys among immigrant Chinese parents in New York was higher than the national average for Chinese families. Boys typically account for about 515 of every 1,000 births. But he found that among Chinese New Yorkers having a third child, the number of boys was about 558.

The landslide buried the Jiwei Mountain iron ore mine and covered its two entrances with rocks Friday while 27 miners were still inside, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Authorities believe they could still be alive.

No official death toll has been released, but state broadcaster CCTV reported Saturday that 26 people were killed — 19 miners and seven staff from a mobile phone company. When asked to confirm the report, Chongqing government spokesman Ai Yang said no bodies had been found so far.

The landslide occurred in Wulong county, about 90 miles (150 kilometers) from resource-rich Chongqing city, where industrial accidents are common.

Rescuers attempted to reach the shaft where the miners are believed to be trapped by setting off explosives Saturday near one of the plant’s entrances, Xinhua said. More explosives were detonated Sunday, CCTV said. Plans were under way to drill a 130 foot (40 meter) deep hole to give the miners air and send water and food down.

A Wulong county Communist Party official, who would only give her surname Zhu, said Sunday that 72 people were missing, including the trapped miners. It was unclear whether that number included the deaths reported by CCTV. She did not provide other details.

China’s vice-premier in charge of industrial policies, Zhang Dejiang, inspected the rescue work Saturday and urged precautions against secondary disasters, Xinhua said, adding to earlier calls by President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao to spare no effort to save those buried.

An official with the Chongqing work safety supervision bureau, who would give only his surname Dong because he was not authorized to speak to media, said the landslide did not appear to be related to mining activities.

Experts were investigating the cause, Xinhua said.

A landslide last year killed at least 277 people when a shoddy holding reservoir burst and inundated a valley in Shanxi province in northern China with mud and iron-mining waste.
