How to cook rice – part 1
Posted on February 15th, 2008 by wokfusion under Cooking TipsChinese meals are eaten with rice. It seems to be a fact that everyone knows. As such, in order to make an authentic Chinese meal, it’s important that you know how to make rice the right way. Use these tips to make the tastiest rice possible:
- For the most part, use only long grain rice. Long grain rice is the most common type of rice, and when a recipe calls for rice, it most likely means long grain rice. Most Chinese meals will specifically say to use any other kind of rice if needed.
- Instant or pre-cooked rice actually tastes really bad. Try to avoid it whenever possible.
- Soak the rice in cold water for at least 15-30 minutes before cooking.
- Before cooking the rice, rinse the rice in water several times to get rid of the starch and residue. You’ll know it’s clean when, after rinsing, the water comes out completely clear.
- For a shorter cooking time, use only newly bought rice. Older rice takes a while to cook and requires more water.
- If the rice is a little bit lumpy, sprinkle a bit of cold water on it.
