These six statements made up the typical customer who would attend a cooking class at my parent’s grocery store and cooking school. My parents, Chu-Yen and Pansy Luke, owned a culinary school and grocery store named, “The Oriental Food Market and Cooking School” located in the far north side of Chicago for several decades.
I remember attending my parents cooking lessons as a kid. I would sit in the back and watch him give lectures on making Chow Mein, Beef Chop Suey, and Roasted Duck. I remember how much father enjoyed teaching – a huge smile would show up on his face every time my father got in front of a class.
I also remember the customers. Customers were sooooo happy to find someone who could teach them how to make healthy Chinese food. I remember many of them thrilled at how good their bodies felt after eating Chinese food. But the thing I remember most is the repeat customers and how my parents treated their customers as true friends. My father organized his lessons into different sections or groups where each group covered different recipes. I remember seeing some customers who would show up year after year to get the complete set of group recipes! I even knew many of them by their first names! As a kid, it didn’t make any sense that people would keep showing up to class year after year just to get some recipes. If they wanted recipes, why didn’t they just buy a cookbook?
As I got older, it hit me – these aren’t just some recipes. These recipes were special, and were the kind of recipes that makes someone come back year after year! It’s been almost thirty years and students are still asking my father to make a cookbook. It has been a life long dream to design this unique cookbook for everyone.

My father felt terrible about having to leave his students wanting more. But, he couldn’t individually give every student his recipes – it would take too long.
